Every piece of artwork we ship receives a custom-built crate sized to its exact dimensions. We use museum-grade plywood and engineered lumber, Ethafoam lining for impact absorption, archival wrapping materials that won’t react chemically with the piece’s surface, and edge guards and compression padding for stability in transit. Sculptures and three-dimensional works are suspended within reinforced casings using floating base supports to prevent any contact between the piece and the crate walls during movement.
Paintings are packed face-protected and wrapped in acid-free materials before being secured in a multi-layered structure. Nothing touches the canvas or painted surface. The crate is built around the work, not the other way around.
Climate Protection During Transit
Humidity warps wooden frames and panels. Temperature swings crack paint layers and degrade certain media. These aren’t edge-case risks on a transatlantic shipment — they’re predictable outcomes if the packing and routing don’t account for them.
Our process includes moisture-resistant outer packaging, desiccant packets sealed inside each crate, climate-controlled storage and staging at both the U.S. and Spain ends, and routing that minimizes exposure to environmental extremes. Artwork is picked up from your U.S. address by trained fine art handlers, not a general moving crew. Every piece is photographed and tagged before it leaves your home, creating a documented record of condition that travels with the shipment. Loading is done by hand without conveyor belts, forklifts, or warehouse shelving contact.
On delivery in Spain, we offer in-home placement with a local art logistics partner if you want the work positioned and hung, not just dropped at the door. That coordination is arranged in advance so it’s ready when your shipment arrives.

Insurance for Artwork Shipments
All-Risk coverage is the appropriate insurance choice for artwork, covering physical damage during transit, theft or loss, handling issues at customs, and environmental damage when the piece has been properly crated. To qualify, SDC must handle the packing and crating, and you’ll need to provide an itemized valuation, condition reports, and inventory documentation. For high-value pieces, a current appraisal strengthens the claim documentation significantly.

Customs Considerations for Art Imports to Spain
Artwork imported as part of a personal relocation can qualify for duty-free entry under Spain’s Transfer of Residence exemption, provided the pieces have been in your personal ownership for at least six months and are genuinely part of your household rather than being imported for commercial purposes. Works imported for sale, exhibition, or commercial purposes fall under different customs rules and require separate documentation.
Antiques over 100 years old may be subject to additional documentation requirements under EU cultural property regulations.
