Protect Your Move to Spain with International Moving Insurance

When you ship your household goods from the United States to Spain, your belongings spend weeks in transit across multiple hands, trucked to port, loaded onto a vessel, cleared through customs, and delivered to your door. That’s a long journey with a lot of transfer points, and even well-managed moves can encounter damage, loss, or unexpected handling issues along the way.

International moving insurance protects against those risks. SDC offers two coverage options, Total Loss and All-Risk, and helps you choose the right one based on what you’re shipping and how much protection makes sense for your move. If you’re planning a move to Spain, this page explains how each option works, what it covers, and what you need to do to qualify.

The Two Coverage Options

Total Loss Insurance

Total Loss coverage pays out if your entire shipment is lost or destroyed, a container that goes overboard, a catastrophic fire, a total non-delivery. It does not cover partial damage or loss of individual items within the shipment. If a piece of furniture arrives broken or a box goes missing, Total Loss does not apply.

This is the lower-cost option and the right choice when you’re shipping a shared container or a partial household, when the individual items are relatively easy to replace, or when you want a basic safety net without paying for full coverage. It requires a detailed inventory with declared values for the shipment but does not require SDC to do the packing.

All-Risk Cargo Insurance

All-Risk coverage protects against a much broader range of outcomes: breakage, scratches, water and mold damage, theft of individual items, handling damage during customs inspection, and damage from fire, collision, or natural events during transit. Coverage runs from the moment packing begins at your U.S. address through final delivery at your Spanish door.

This is the right choice for full household moves, for shipments that include high-value or irreplaceable items, and for anyone who wants genuine door-to-door protection rather than catastrophic-loss-only coverage. There are two requirements: SDC must pack the items professionally, and you must submit an itemized valued inventory. Items packed by the client are not eligible for All-Risk coverage under the policy terms.

One practical note on valuation: you can insure your belongings for their replacement value in Spain rather than their original purchase price. Given that furniture, electronics, and home goods often cost more in Spain than in the U.S., this is worth considering when building your inventory values. Our professional packing services page covers how SDC’s packing process works and why it matters for insurance eligibility.

What Is and Isn’t Covered

Under All-Risk coverage, the standard policy covers furniture, clothing, electronics, kitchenware, books, artwork, musical instruments, and personal effects. The items that sit outside standard coverage and need to be declared separately include jewelry, high-value watches, cash, and negotiable documents. Hazardous materials and prohibited items are excluded entirely.

If your shipment includes significant artwork, antiques, or collector’s items that you want specifically covered, those can be declared and insured with appropriate documentation. Our artwork shipping to Spain page covers the additional handling and documentation requirements for fine art shipments specifically.

What Affects the Cost

Insurance cost is driven primarily by your shipment’s declared value and the coverage type you choose. Volume and weight factor in, as does the shipping method, since air freight and sea freight have different risk profiles and rate structures. Whether SDC or the client handles packing also affects eligibility and therefore cost, since self-packed items are only eligible for Total Loss.

We build insurance into the quote conversation rather than treating it as an afterthought. Once we understand what you’re shipping and what coverage makes sense, we give you a clear number as part of the overall cost picture.

How to Qualify and Get Coverage in Place

The process is straightforward. First, decide which coverage type fits your shipment. Then prepare a detailed valued inventory, every item listed with a description and estimated replacement value. For All-Risk policies, confirm SDC is handling the packing. Your relocation coordinator walks you through the insurance agreement and makes sure the documentation is in place before your shipment is loaded.

The inventory is the most important document in this process. A thorough, accurate inventory not only satisfies the policy requirements but also makes any claim significantly faster to process if something does go wrong.

If You Need to File a Claim

Contact your SDC relocation coordinator as soon as you identify the issue. Document the damage or loss with photographs before moving or disposing of anything. Pull together your inventory, your shipping documents, and any delivery receipts. Claims are processed through SDC’s international insurance partners, and having your documentation organized from the start is what keeps the process moving efficiently.

If damage is discovered at delivery, note it on the delivery receipt before the driver leaves. That notation is part of the claim record and matters for how the claim is evaluated.

Ready to Talk Through Your Coverage?

Insurance is easier to think through early in the planning process than to piece together at the last minute. The conversation about coverage naturally connects to decisions about packing, inventory, and shipping method, so it works best when it’s part of the initial consultation rather than an add-on at the end.

For an overview of how insurance fits into the full moving process, our Spain moving services page covers everything SDC coordinates from start to finish. To talk through your specific shipment and what coverage makes sense, call us at (844) 651-7050 or fill out the quote form on this page.
