Step 2: Packing and Preparation

Step 4: Spanish Customs Clearance
Customs is the part of an international move that worries people most, and understandably so. It’s unfamiliar, it’s document-driven, and errors can cause delays. What most people find, once they’ve been through it with proper support, is that it’s methodical rather than unpredictable.
Americans relocating permanently to Spain can import their household goods duty-free under Spain’s Transfer of Residence exemption, known formally as the Menaje de Casa provision. To qualify, your goods need to have been in personal use for at least six months, you need to be establishing Spain as your primary residence, and you need to have lived outside the EU for at least 12 consecutive months before your move. The core customs document is the B534 form, Spain’s primary declaration for household imports under this program, which our customs team prepares and files on your behalf.
The documentation package typically includes your passport, proof of Spanish residency (your visa, NIE, or empadronamiento), proof of prior U.S. residence, a detailed itemized inventory translated into Spanish, and the completed B534. The paperwork needs to be in order before your shipment arrives at the Spanish port, not after. We coordinate all of this as a standard part of the process.

Step 5: Delivery to Your Spanish Address
Once your shipment clears customs, it moves from the port to your door. Our delivery network covers all of Spain, including the Balearic and Canary Islands. What You Can Ship and What to Leave Behind
Most of what’s in a typical American home ships to Spain without complications, provided the items have been owned and used for at least six months and are clearly for personal use. Furniture, clothing, kitchen equipment, electronics, books, artwork, musical instruments, sports equipment, and personal décor all fall well within what the Transfer of Residence exemption covers.
A few categories require more thought. Brand-new items, particularly those still in original packaging, can draw customs scrutiny because they resemble commercial imports rather than personal belongings. If you’re planning to buy new things before your move, it’s worth thinking through whether to ship them or buy replacements in Spain.
Hazardous materials, including paint, aerosols, cleaning chemicals, propane, and lithium batteries above certain thresholds, cannot go in an international shipment. Perishable food, plants, and soil are restricted under EU biosecurity rules. Firearms require advance permits and a separate process through the Spanish Civil Guard. Alcohol and tobacco in personal quantities can technically travel with your goods, but quantities above what’s clearly personal use can complicate clearance.
Vehicles can be imported under the same Transfer of Residence exemption that covers household goods, but the process runs on a separate track and involves Spain’s ITV inspection and emissions compliance.
